Website pic Dear Yocum Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at the BEST SCHOOL IN THE UNIVERSE!!  I wanted to let you know about a few new things that are in place this year.   Our goal is to keep kids healthy, happy and safe so that they may learn as much as they can.   Thanks to the referendum that was passed, we are in the finishing stages of getting a new roof!  No more leaks! We have an upgraded security vestibule with a transaction window. Visitors will slide their identification through this window for verification before entering the building.  We will also have a full time officer in every school in the district. This person will be part of our staff and visible every morning and afternoon at drop off and pick up.

We are excited to introduce our new Family Reading program to you! This simple program will only take ten minutes of your time each night but will help your child tremendously as they begin to navigate the many factors that go into reading. This will be their only nightly assigned homework although we encourage reading for an additional 10 minutes for K, 20 minutes for 1st and 30 minutes for 2nd . We will also send a weekly page on Monday with suggestions on reading, what to study and math skills to focus on for the week.   If your child does not finish his/her classroom work, it may be sent home to complete.

In an effort to focus on increasing student’s reading time, we will continue our Rise and Read initiative.  Please make sure that your student carries one or two books in their backpack at all times throughout the school year.  They will have the opportunity to read them during arrival/dismissal time.

We believe in restorative practices.   Restorative practices take incidents that might otherwise result in punishment and create opportunities for students to become aware of the impact of their behavior, understand the obligation to take responsibility for their actions and to take steps toward making things right.   For example if your child doodles on the classroom table, a natural consequence would be to clean the table, not have recess taken away.

The First Day of School is a full day for everyone!  Monday, September 9, 2019, 2 HOUR Delay Morning Line Up: Grades 1 and 2 meet outside on the blacktop, adjacent to Forklanding Road,  starting at 10:35 am.   Kindergarten will meet in the gymnasium starting at 10:35 am.   Parents are allowed in the gym but will not be able to follow students to the classrooms. Mrs. Bart’s, Ms. Gentilello’s, Mrs. Cassidy's and  Mrs. Miller’s classrooms will meet in the gymnasium starting at 10:35 am. **In case of inclement weather, all classes will meet in the gymnasium.

Tuesday and Regular (Full) Days of School Students may enter the building at 8:35 am. No parents will be allowed to accompany them. All students will line up outside their classrooms. Students will be reading a book as they wait for the school day to begin at 8:53 am. Dismissal is at 3:15 pm for a full day.

Student Drop-Off - Starting at 8:35 Parents should enter the main entrance from Forklanding Road and weave through the back parking lot to the sign labeled STUDENT DROP OFF. Drop-off will occur at the curb next to the building. (Signs indicate location) Staff will assist students out of cars. Please remain in your vehicle during drop-off. *The front loop is for buses only.  It is not for drop-off or pick-up.

Student Pick-Up Students will be dismissed on the playground side of the school.  1st and 2nd grade students will exit the building through the first door (blue door) by the Media Center. Kindergarten students will exit from the second door (yellow door) past the playground. All students must have an adult present before they are released.  The student must point to identify you. No cars will be permitted to park along the school side of the drop-off loop for pick up.

All forms (including Medical!)  will be signed and distributed via the Genesis Parent Portal and open to you on August 21st.  It is important that you take the time to review these forms and follow the directions listed for each one.  Be sure to update your contact information, including current phone numbers, and your email address. The Maple Shade Student/Parent Handbook will also be located on the Portal.  Please read this carefully to become familiar with the policies and procedures of the school. You will be able to access your student information, including teacher and class schedule after all the forms have been completed.   If you do not have internet access, you may go to the Maple Shade Public Library to review and complete the forms.

I invite all parents to take advantage of our communication resources and social media space. To follow the school on Facebook, visit http://facebook.com/YocumSchool.  I post pictures and information weekly on things going on in our school!

For planning purchases, please make note of a few dates as they may pertain to you or your student.

The “Meet the Teachers” Kindergarten orientation will take place on Thursday, September 5th at 9:00 am.  This event for incoming kindergarten students and parents offers a unique opportunity for our newest students to meet their teachers and become acclimated to the school surroundings.   If your child is eligible for the bus, transportation will be available that morning at your assigned bus stop. One parent is allowed to ride the bus with their child. Additional parents may meet us at the school. The morning ends at 10:00 am and the bus will bring the child and parent back to their bus stop.  If your child will be riding the bus during the school year, we highly encourage you to take the ride. We will teach the students the procedures they will need to follow!

Yocum’s Back to School Night will take place on Thursday, September 26th.  This event is so well attended that we split the times of the night for parking reasons.  Look for information to go home regarding times after the first week of school.

In closing, I want to thank all parents and guardians for your continued support of your student’s education.  Our mission statement is: At Yocum School, students, families and staff are respected, loved and accepted so that we all can grow and learn together!    I’m looking forward to an amazing year!

Sincerely,

Yvonne S. Reitz
