Dear Yocum Families,



Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year at the BEST SCHOOL IN THE UNIVERSE!!  We appreciate our teachers who have been working hard writing curriculum, diving into PLC content, teaching Summer School and continuing their professional studies this summer.  Thank you also to Mark and our custodial staff who are working to get our building clean and ready for students.


When Summer School is over on July 27th, the school will be closed except for the office on Monday - Thursdays 8 - 3:30.  You will be able to get into the building with full access on August 14th.  

We are excited to introduce you to the newest members of the Yocum family:

Congratulations to Mrs. Deisy Cerdan (formally Maguirre), Mrs. Natalie Winthrop (formerly Sica),  Mrs. Christine Fernandes (formally Neitzel) and Mrs. Danielle Bruno (formally Button) who got married over the Summer!


All forms (including Medical!)  will be signed and distributed via the Genesis Parent Portal.  It is important that you take the time to review these forms and follow directions listed for each one.  Be sure to update your contact information, including current phone numbers, and your email address.  The Maple Shade Student/Parent Handbook will also be located on the Portal.  Please read this carefully to become familiar with the policies and procedures of the school.  You will be able to access your student information, including teacher and class schedule, after all the forms have been completed.  Forms will be available for your review and completion as of Monday, August 21st.  If you do not have internet access, you may go to the Maple Shade Public Library to review and complete the forms.

In an effort to focus on increasing student’s reading time, we will continue our Rise and Read initiative.  Please make sure that your student carries one or two books in their backpack at all times throughout the school year.  They will have the opportunity to read them during arrival/dismissal time.


Yocum’s school wide positive behavior support program (Y.E.S.) continues to be an overwhelming success as teachers, students, administrators and parents all employ the same system for rewarding positive behavior.  Thank you for your continued support of the program and for helping to reinforce the principles of Y.E.S. at home.









The First Day of School - Thursday, September 7, 2017

Morning Line Up:

  • Grades 1 and 2 meet outside on the blacktop, adjacent to Forklanding Road,  starting at 8:35am.

  • Kindergarten will meet in the gymnasium starting at 8:35am.

  • Mrs. O’Hara, Ms. Gentilello’s  and Mrs. Miller’s classroom will meet in the gymnasium starting at 8:35am.

       **In case of inclement weather, all classes will meet in the gymnasium.  

·         The first day is a four hour session, no lunch will be served.

·         Pick up will be at 1:05pm on September 6, 2016. Please pack a small snack for your child.

Regular (Full) Days of School

  • Students may enter building at 8:35am.

  • All students will line up outside their classrooms.

  • Students will be reading a book as they wait for the school day to begin at 8:53am.

  • Dismissal is at 3:15pm for a full day.

Student Drop-Off - Starting at 8:35

  • Parents should enter the main entrance from Forklanding Road and weave through back parking lot to the sign labeled STUDENT DROP OFF.

  • Drop-off will occur at the curb next to the building. (Signs indicate location)

  • Staff will assist students out of cars.

  • Please remain in your vehicle during drop-off.

       *The front loop is for buses only.  It is not for drop-off or pick-up.

Student Pick-Up

  • Students will be dismissed on the playground side of the school.  

  • 1st and 2nd grade students will exit the building through the first door by the Media Center.

  • Kindergarten students will exit from the second door past the playground. Kindergarten students must have an adult present before they are released.  The student must point to identify you before being released.

  • No cars will be permitted to park along the school side of the drop-off loop for pick up.

For planning purchases, please make note of a few dates as they may pertain to you or your student.  The “Meet the Teachers” Kindergarten orientation will take place on Thursday, August 24th at 9:00am.  This event for incoming kindergarten students and parents offers a unique opportunity for our newest students to meet their teachers and become acclimated to the school surroundings.  Yocum’s Back to School Night will take place on Thursday, September 28th  at 6:30pm.  I highly encourage your attendance and look forward to seeing you there.

In closing, I want to again thank all parents and guardians for your continued support of your student’s education.  At Yocum, we derive so much of our success from the collaborative and supportive relationship we share with home.  Our staff is committed to ensuring that the 2017-2018 school year will bring continued academic growth as well as lasting memories for all.  Please contact my office if you have any concerns as the new school approaches.  Enjoy the rest of your summer having fun with family and friends.  I look forward to seeing you in September!
